Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged Iran and the United States to exercise restraint and return to diplomatic negotiations amid ongoing tensions between the two nations. During discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Beijing, Wang emphasized the importance of resolving conflicts through dialogue, asserting that prolonged discord benefits neither the involved parties nor the international community.
Wang highlighted the necessity for both countries to adhere to their existing memorandum of understanding and reinstate a negotiation process based on previously established agreements. He also stressed the significance of maintaining stability in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global energy supplies and international shipping routes, advocating for its reopening to preserve safe maritime passage.
In addition to addressing the Iran-U.S. tensions, Wang called on regional countries to prevent the conflict from affecting Yemen and the Red Sea. He encouraged resolving disputes through dialogue, reflecting China’s broader interest in promoting peace and security in the Middle East.
Echoing the call for diplomacy, Araghchi conveyed Iran’s readiness to return to diplomatic avenues while safeguarding its national interests. He affirmed Tehran’s recognition of the existing U.S.-Iran memorandum as valid and expressed Iran’s willingness to collaborate with regional countries to enhance relations and security.
Araghchi also expressed support for China’s initiatives aimed at bolstering peace and security in the Middle East, indicating Tehran’s interest in deepening cooperation with Beijing. This dialogue underscores China’s role as a mediator in international conflicts, particularly in regions critical to global energy and trade.
