Oman has reiterated its dedication to ensuring maritime security and the freedom of navigation while enhancing partnerships with Southeast Asian nations. This commitment was emphasized during a ministerial meeting in Manila, Philippines, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC). Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi highlighted the necessity of adhering to international law, mutual respect, and peaceful collaboration to maintain both regional and global stability.
Minister Al Busaidi underscored the significance of dialogue and diplomacy as fundamental tools for conflict resolution and confidence-building among countries. In his address, he stressed that crucial international waterways, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, must remain open and secure to facilitate global navigation and trade. He pointed to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the cornerstone for maintaining maritime security and safeguarding global trade, food security, and energy resources.
Oman also called for increased cooperation among coastal nations and users of international shipping routes. The minister cited the Strait of Malacca and Singapore as a prime example of effective collaborative maritime security. This model, he suggested, could serve as a blueprint for similar partnerships elsewhere.
In reinforcing its commitment, Oman expressed its intention to strengthen maritime partnerships with ASEAN member states. The country views these alliances as vital for ensuring the security of key trade routes that are essential for international commerce and regional prosperity.
