Iran has announced plans to create a new “exclusion zone” near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passageway for global oil and gas flow, targeting vessels it suspects of attempting to traverse the area. Mohsen Rezaei, the newly appointed head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, revealed that this zone would stretch from the U.S. naval blockade area towards the Strait of Hormuz and extend into the Arabian Gulf. Rezaei noted that ships identified as entering the zone with intentions of crossing the strait might face inclusion on an Iranian sanctions list.
This development comes in the wake of heightened tensions, marked by a U.S. attack on three Iranian oil tankers following Iran’s ballistic missile attacks on U.S. warships. Additionally, Iran claimed responsibility for striking an unmanned U.S. vessel attempting to enter the strait, although the U.S. military has dismissed this assertion.
