WhatsApp is introducing a significant update that will transform how users connect on its platform by enabling interactions through usernames instead of phone numbers. This new feature, currently being rolled out in phases, allows users to reserve their unique usernames before the feature is fully available globally later in the year. Once implemented, users can initiate chats using a username, thus keeping their mobile numbers private.
In this new system, users can generate a unique handle within the app. When someone wishes to message them, only the username is required, with no phone number visibility. If a desired username is already taken, WhatsApp will provide alternative suggestions using an in-built generator. Importantly, there will be no public directory of usernames, ensuring that only individuals who know the exact username can make contact.
To reserve a username, WhatsApp users should update their app and navigate to Settings → Account → Username to check availability. Given the platform’s vast user base, with billions globally, early reservations are encouraged to secure preferred usernames, which are likely to be highly competitive. Users will receive notifications as the feature becomes accessible in their region.
For added privacy, the feature includes an optional “username key,” providing an additional security layer. This key can be shared separately, allowing users to control who can start conversations with them. This new privacy feature is beneficial for both personal users and public figures such as creators, businesses, and public accounts, offering the ability to sync their WhatsApp identity with handles on other platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
While WhatsApp is offering this new username option, it remains an optional feature. Users who prefer the traditional method of connecting via phone numbers can continue to do so. The service will notify users through in-app alerts as the feature becomes available in their specific regions.
