Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has pledged to steadfastly advocate for Iran’s positions at global platforms as he prepares for his visit to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Prior to his departure on Tuesday, Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s determination to assert the rights and interests of its citizens on the international stage.
In advance of Pezeshkian’s arrival, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reached New York on Monday to spearhead Tehran’s diplomatic efforts at the annual UN gathering. Upon his arrival, Araghchi engaged in a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, where topics related to the General Assembly were discussed. Araghchi stated that Iran’s principal goal is to utilize the international platform to underscore what it views as the legitimacy and rights of the Iranian people.
During the UN session, Araghchi is expected to meet with various foreign ministers and officials. The participation of the Iranian delegation occurs amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, including a contentious situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial channel for global oil and gas shipments.
Iran has communicated through Qatar its conditions for reopening the strategic waterway, while the United States has implemented measures aimed at Iranian ports. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains a significant point of concern as global powers keep a close watch on the developments.
