The Kremlin has signaled a possible reconsideration of peace talks following what Moscow describes as a Ukrainian attempt to attack President Putin’s residence. US President Donald Trump, informed of the incident by Putin, expressed strong disapproval of the alleged action.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that Ukraine launched 91 unmanned aerial vehicles toward Putin’s Novgorod region property. He stated that while all drones were intercepted and destroyed, the incident represented a shift to “state terrorism” requiring consequences.
Trump’s remarks to reporters highlighted his concern about targeting leadership residences during sensitive peace negotiations. He acknowledged Ukraine’s military operations but emphasized that attacks on a world leader’s home represent a different category that undermines diplomatic progress.
President Zelensky categorically rejected the allegations as Russian propaganda designed to sabotage peace efforts. He suggested Moscow might be fabricating the incident to justify future attacks on Ukrainian government buildings and to derail the constructive dialogue with Trump’s administration.
The dispute emerged immediately after what appeared to be productive talks between Trump and Zelensky in Florida. The Kremlin’s announcement following Trump’s call with Putin that Russia would reassess its negotiating position raises serious questions about the future of peace efforts.
