Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani convened in Moscow to discuss enhancing political, economic, and energy ties between their nations. This meeting occurred on the sidelines of the eighth Gas Exporting Countries Forum summit, a gathering of major natural gas producers such as Iran, Russia, Qatar, and Algeria.
During their discussions, both leaders underscored the significance of deepening bilateral relations and examined prospects for expanding cooperation. They also focused on improving coordination among gas-exporting countries to bolster their shared interests in the energy sector.
The timing of this meeting is notable, as it takes place amid ongoing Middle East conflict initiated by US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. In response, Iran launched missile and drone attacks across the region, including incidents affecting Qatar.
Qatar has been instrumental in diplomatic efforts to ease regional tensions and facilitate negotiations between Iran and the United States. These efforts highlight Qatar’s role in seeking peaceful resolutions in the midst of escalating conflicts.
Following his meeting with the Qatari emir, President Pezeshkian was scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. The discussions with Putin are expected to focus on regional developments and strengthening cooperation between Tehran and Moscow. Russia has also expressed its willingness to support diplomatic initiatives aimed at concluding the Middle East conflict.
