Iran has accused Qatar of hindering efforts to investigate the disappearance of three Iranian pilots amid recent conflicts, a claim that Qatar has firmly denied. According to Iranian armed forces official Mohammad Bagherzadeh, a team of Iranian Air Force experts has been awaiting clearance to travel to Qatar to probe the situation. Bagherzadeh has appealed to Doha to permit the team’s visit and urged the International Committee of the Red Cross to get involved.
The situation has its roots in a previous incident where Iran reported the recovery of pilot Majid Kazemi’s body. Kazemi was reportedly killed during an attack involving the US Al Udeid Air Base located in Qatar. Despite this, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari has categorically denied any detention of Iranian pilots. Al-Ansari explained that Qatar had contacted the Iranian pilots after they allegedly breached Qatari airspace, but defensive measures were taken when the pilots did not respond to communication attempts.
Qatar asserts that its search and rescue teams have actively engaged in efforts to locate both the pilots and any remains. The Qatari government stated that it has worked collaboratively with Iran regarding the transfer of one pilot’s remains that were recovered. Moreover, Qatar claims that Iranian authorities were invited as far back as April to send a delegation to obtain detailed information about the search and rescue mission, but they have not yet responded to this invitation.
The ongoing dispute between Iran and Qatar is set against a backdrop of heightened tensions involving Iran, the United States, and other regional players following the onset of the conflict earlier this year. Qatar has been playing a pivotal diplomatic role in attempting to mitigate these tensions and has been active in facilitating communication between the conflicting parties.
